May 25, 2023 — A lawsuit has been filed by a woman who went blind in her right eye after using EzriCare Eye Drops she bought from Amazon.com.
The lawsuit was filed by Beverly J., a resident of Michigan who started using the eye drops in April 2022.
After using the eye drops for approximately two months, she began to develop pain and redness in her right eye.
Doctors diagnosed her with a neurotrophic ulcer and a corneal ulcer. She also tested positive for Pseudomonas aeruginosa, an antibiotic-resistant bacteria that can cause life-threatening infections.
Despite taking multiple antibiotics, her vision loss worsened due to severe scarring and she went completely blind in her right eye by September 2022, after suffering through months of severe pain and antibiotic treatments.
Five months afterward, in February 2023, the FDA announced a recall for EzriCare Artificial Tears, Delsam Pharma Artificial Tears and Delsam Pharma Eye Ointment due to bacterial contamination.
Health officials reported that 55 people had been infected with Pseudomonas aeruginosa after using the eye drops, including several people who lost their vision or had to be hospitalized. One person died after the infection spread into their bloodstream.
Her lawsuit was filed against Amazon.com, EzriCare LLC, EzriRX, Global Pharma Healthcare, and Aru Pharma on May 19, 2023 in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey — Case 3:23-cv-02731.
