Firefighter Loses Vision After Using EzriCare Eye Drops

Firefighter Loses Vision After Using EzriCare Eye Drops

February 28, 2023 — A firefighter from Florida who lost his vision after using contaminated eye drops has filed a lawsuit against Amazon.com and the eye drop manufacturers.

The plaintiff, Adam D., is a first responder who is employed as a Fire Department Captain / EMT in Naples, Florida, where he has worked for 21 years.

In May 2022 and again in September 2022, he bought 2-packs of EzriCare Artificial Tears from Amazon for the treatment of dry eyes.

After using the product, he began experiencing eye irritation, swelling, extreme pain and discomfort, sensitivity to light and touch, blurry vision, and ultimately blindness in his left eye, according to the lawsuit.

He was referred to the ER in Miami, Florida in October 2022. There he met with eye specialists who diagnosed him with an infection caused by Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, an antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

The infection was only cured after weeks of intensive treatment. Afterward, 3 out of 4 bottles of EzriCare Artificial Tears in his possession were tested at the Bascom-Palmer Eye Institute. They were contaminated “with a heavy growth of Pseudomonas Aeruginosa,” according to the lawsuit.

The lawsuit also alleges that he continues to suffer from left eye disfigurement, headaches, dizziness, blindness to his left eye, emotional distress, and will need a cornea replacement in the future.

The defendants are EzriCare LLC, EzriRX LLX, Delsam Pharma LLC, ARU Pharma Inc., and Amazon.com Inc.

The lawsuit was filed on February 23, 2023 in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida (Civil Division) — Case Number 2:23-cv-00120-SPC-KCD.
