July 13, 2012 — The Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) and Health Canada have announced a recall of 11 models of Flexible Flyer Swing Sets. The product’s manufacturer, Troxel, has received 1,232 reports of see saw seats breaking. Thirteen children have been injured by bumps, bruises, and lacerations when the see saw seats break away from bolt fasteners during use. This defect exposes children to fall injuries and jagged plastic and/or metal, which could cause serious injury. The recall affects approximately 100,500 swing sets in the United States and 4,900 in Canada.
It is unusual that there were more than 1,200 reports of broken see saws before Troxel decided to issue a recall. Usually recalls are initiated immediately after a company realizes there is a defect with their product, especially one intended to be used by children. Furthermore, it is likely that there were actually more than 1,200 incidents, because reporting incidents is voluntary. The actual number of broken see saws could actually be significantly higher.

- 42003 BACKYARD FLYER
- 42013 BACKYARD FUN
- 42023 BACKYARD SWINGIN’ FUN
- 42030 WINDSOR II
- 42124 FUN TIME
- 42126 FANTASTIC PLAYGROUND
- 42544 TRIPLE FUN
- 42560 TRIPLE FUN II
These model numbers are located under the middle of the top bar on the swing part of the swing set.
The swing sets were sold at Walmart, Toys R Us, Academy, specialty stores, and online retailers from December 2011 through May 2012. Each swing set cost between $130 and $280.
The CPSC is advising that consumers stop using the see saws immediately. Furthermore, they should contact the manufacturer for a free repair kit. The company can be reached at (888) 770-7060 or on their website, http://www.regcen.com/flexibleflyer.
