Frozen Fruit Recalled for Listeria Risk At Walmart, Other Stores

Frozen Fruit Recalled for Listeria Risk At Walmart, Other Stores

June 23, 2023 — Two recalls have been issued for a massive amount of frozen fruit due to a risk of Listeria contamination.

On June 21, SunOpta Inc. recalled multiple brands of frozen fruit due to a risk of Listeria monocytogenes contamination in the pineapple.

The recall involves frozen pineapple, mixed fruit, sweet cherries, mango chunks, strawberries, bananas, blackberries, and blueberries.

The products were sold at Walmart, Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, Target, Aldi, and AWG (Associated Wholesale Grocers) in dozens of states from October 2022 through June 2023.

In response to the recall from SunOpta, another recall was issued on June 22 by Scenic Fruit Company for two frozen fruit products that were sold at Trader Joe’s and health food stores in CA, IL, IN, FL, MD, OR and TX.

Those products include Cadia® Organic Pineapple, and Trader Joe’s® Organic Tropical Fruit Blend (Pineapple, Banana, Strawberry, Mango).

No illnesses have been linked to either recall, but infections with Listeria monocytogenes can be serious and sometimes fatal.

Pregnant women who are infected may show few symptoms, but suffer a miscarriage, stillbirth, or life-threatening infection of the baby.

Other people can suffer a life-threatening invasive infection that spreads to the brain, resulting in meningitis. The symptoms may include a high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, according to the FDA.
