Tailor Cut Produce Fruit Salmonella Outbreak
In February 2020, the CDC reported that at least 165 people in 14 states were infected with Salmonella Javiana after eating pre-cut mixed fruit from Tailor Cut Produce of New Jersey.
The outbreak involves Fruit Luau mixed fruit, which contains a mix of pre-cut cantaloupe, honeydew, pineapple, and grapes. The fruit was sold to hospitals, nursing homes, schools, and other institutions.
The illnesses were reported in California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Washington state.
Melon Salmonella Outbreaks
In April 2019, the CDC reported that at least 137 people in 10 states were infected with Salmonella Carrau after eating pre-cut melon bowls supplied by Caito Foods LLC.
The illnesses were linked to pre-cut cantaloupe, watermelon, honeydew, fruit salad mix, or fruit trays that contained melon. Caito Foods issued a recall in April 2019.
Caito Foods issued another recall in June 2018 after another Salmonella outbreak infected at least 77 people who ate pre-cut watermelon, honeydew, cantaloupe, and fruit trays containing melons.
Papaya Salmonella Outbreaks
Papayas from Mexico have been linked to multiple outbreaks of Salmonella in the U.S. in 2017 and 2019.
In 2019, at least 81 people in 9 states were infected with Salmonella Uganda after eating Cavi® whole papayas from Mexico, according to an update from the CDC in November 2019.
In 2017, Maradol papayas from Mexico were linked to over 250 Salmonella illnesses, including 2 deaths. The CDC linked 4 separate outbreaks to 4 different farms in Mexico:
- Maradol Papayas — Salmonella Urbana — 7 illnesses in 4 states
- Maradol Papayas — Salmonella Newport — 4 illnesses in 4 states
- Maradol Papayas — Salmonella Anatum — 20 illnesses in 3 states; 1 death
- Maradol Papayas — Salmonella Thompson, Salmonella Kiambu, Salmonella Agona, and Salmonella Gaminara — 220 illnesses in 23 states; 1 death
