Tailor Cut Produce Recalls Pre-Cut Fruit

Salmonella Outbreak Infects At Least 30 People

In December 2019, Tailor Cut Produce of New Jersey issued a recall for a variety of pre-cut fruit after an outbreak of Salmonella infected at least 30 people.

Where Was the Recalled Fruit Sold?

The recalled fruit products were distributed in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York and Delaware between November 15 and December 1, 2019.

The fruit was not sold in grocery stores. Instead, it was distributed to hospitals, nursing homes, schools, hotels, and other facilities with food-service operations.

What Products Were Recalled?

The recall involves the company’s Fruit Luau mix, which contains a mix of pre-cut cantaloupe, honeydew, pineapple, and grapes. Tailor Cut Produce also recalled pre-cut honeydew, cut cantaloupe and cut pineapple.

How Many People Are Sick?

As of December 30, 2019, the CDC has confirmed 96 illnesses in California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Washington state.

Dozens of illnesses have been linked to 4 hospitals in southeast Pennsylvania, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health. The hospitals were not named.

No deaths were reported, but at least 27 people were hospitalized due to a severe illness, according to the FDA outbreak investigationSalmonella Javiana Potentially Linked to Tailor Cut Produce Fruit Mix, Winter 2019.

Salmonella Food Poisoning

The outbreak is concerning because Salmonella is far more likely to cause a severe illness in people who are hospitalized, very young, or elderly. In rare cases, infection with Salmonella can result in a bloodstream infection, arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis, arthritis, or even death.
