Glitter Phone Recall

In August 2017, MixBin Electronics of Hamilton, New Jersey voluntarily recalled about 263,000 liquid glitter iPhone cases for the iPhone 6, 6s, and 7.

Where Were Glitter Phones Sold?

The recalled liquid glitter iPhone cases were sold at Victoria’s Secret, Nordstrom Rack, Tori Burch, Henri Bendel, and MixBin stores nationwide for $16-$65 between October 2015 and June 2017.

What is the Problem?

There have been 19 reports in the U.S. and 24 reports worldwide of people who suffered chemical burns after touching the liquid chemical that leaked out of a broken MixBin glitter iPhone case.

MixBin did not say what chemical is in the recalled iPhone cases, but claims it is a “safe food grade snow globe liquid.” Even so, there are reports of people who suffered extensive swelling and skin irritation, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC):

“One consumer reported permanent scarring from a chemical burn and another consumer reported chemical burns and swelling to her leg, face, neck, chest, upper body and hands.”

What is a Chemical Burn?

Chemical burns, also known as “caustic burns,” occur when skin cells are damaged or destroyed by contact with a toxic chemical or acid. These burns can occur by touching a chemical or breathing fumes.

Complications of Chemical Burns

Chemical burns can cause severe injuries, depending on the type of chemical and the level of exposure. For example, certain acids can burn through the entire layer of skin in seconds. These burns may result in infections, disfigurement, or scarring. Patients may require surgery or skin grafts to control infections and reconstruct the skin.

Symptoms of a Chemical Burn

  • Pain
  • Skin irritation
  • Redness
  • Swelling
  • Numbness in the affected area
  • Blisters
  • Black or dead skin

Chemical Burn Treatment

Infection is one of the most serious risks of chemical burns, so treatment often involves a topical antibiotic (skin cream or ointment) to kill bacteria. For people with 2nd-degree or 3rd-degree chemical burns, surgery may be necessary to transplant skin onto the burn. These skin graft surgeries are very painful, but they help with healing.
