UPDATE: Another Recall Issued for Deadly Infection Risk in Goldenseal Umbilical Cord Care Powder
On December 4, 2020, WishGarden Herbs Inc. recalled certain Goldenseal Powder and Cord Care Powder products due to a risk of deadly infections. The products contain goldenseal root powder that may be contaminated with dangerous Cronobacter sakazakii bacteria. According to the recall notice:
“Use of these products, when contaminated with this bacteria, may cause serious infections with severe outcomes, including death, especially in vulnerable patients with compromised immune systems and infants.”
The recall involves products that were made after 7/26/18, with expiration dates from 7/26/18 through 9/1/20. The recall includes the following products:
- Wishgarden Cord Care Powder: Used to dry an infant’s umbilical cord stump. It is packaged in 1-oz containers, UPC 6-56490-24730-4, Lots P227 through P235.
- Wishgarden Goldenseal Powder: Used as a drying powder on the skin. It is packaged in 1-oz containers, UPC 6-56490-64137-9, Lots P116 to P120.
Goldenseal Root Powder Recalled After Baby Dies of Infection
In August 2020, Maison Terre recalled all lots of Organic Goldenseal Root Powder due to a risk of infection, surgery, and death. A baby died of an infection after the recalled Goldenseal Root Powder was used on the baby’s umbilical cord stump. The powder was supplied by Starwest Botanicals and sold on Amazon.com since January 2015.
What is the Risk?
Using this product “can result in infections necessitating antimicrobial and potentially surgical treatment. In individuals with weak immune systems and infants, the use of the product can result in death.”
FDA Finds Bacteria in Goldenseal Root Powder
FDA tests found the Goldenseal Root Powder to be contaminated with bacteria including: Enterobacter cloacae, Cronobacter sakazakii, Cronobacter dublinensis, among others.
Product Came from Starwest Botanicals in California
Maison Terre said it bought the Goldenseal Root Powder from Starwest Botanicals, a bulk herb supplier in Sacramento, California.
Sold on Amazon from January 2015 to August 2020
The recalled Goldenseal Root Powder was sold nationwide in the U.S. on Amazon.com between January 25, 2015 and August 4, 2020. The product is a yellow powder that comes in a clear plastic bag, net weight of 1 oz.
