Thermos Food Jars Recalled After 27 Injury Reports, Including 3 Cases of Permanent Vision Loss
In April 2026, Thermos L.L.C. recalled approximately 5.8 million Stainless King Food Jars and about 2.3 million Sportsman Food & Beverage Bottles in cooperation with the CPSC. The recall covers models SK3000 (16-oz.), SK3020 (24-oz.), and SK3010 (40-oz.).
Where Were They Sold?
The recalled products were manufactured before July 2023 and sold at Target, Walmart, and other stores nationwide, as well as online at Amazon.com, Walmart.com, Target.com, and Thermos.com from approximately March 2008 through July 2024 for about $30.
What Is the Problem?
The stoppers on the recalled food jars and bottles lack a pressure relief valve in the center. Thermos describes the defect on its own recall page as follows:
“If perishable food or beverages are stored in the container for an extended period of time, the stopper can forcefully eject when opened, which can result in serious impact injury and laceration hazards to the consumer.”
When perishable contents ferment or otherwise generate pressure inside a sealed container, that pressure has nowhere to escape. Without a relief valve, opening the container can launch the stopper with significant force, directly toward the person opening it.
How Many People Were Injured?
Thermos has received 27 reports of consumers who were struck by a stopper that forcefully ejected from the containers upon opening, including reports of impact and laceration injuries requiring medical attention. The CPSC confirmed that:
- 3 consumers suffered permanent vision loss after being struck in the eye
- Multiple consumers reported impact injuries requiring medical attention
- Multiple consumers reported laceration injuries
The 27 reports span a product sold over a 16-year period at major national retailers. Official reports to the CPSC may only represent a small fraction of actual incidents. This is because some consumers never report injuries to manufacturers or federal regulators.
How to Identify Recalled Thermos Containers
The recall involves three models. You can check whether your container is affected by looking at the model number printed on the bottom of the product and inspecting the stopper for the presence or absence of a pressure relief valve in the center:
- SK3000 — 16-oz. Thermos Stainless King Food Jar, manufactured before July 2023
- SK3020 — 24-oz. Thermos Stainless King Food Jar, manufactured before July 2023
- SK3010 — 40-oz. Thermos Sportsman Food & Beverage Bottle (all units)
- Sold in a variety of colors; the Thermos trademark is on the side of the product
- Sold at Target, Walmart, Amazon, Thermos.com, and other stores from approximately March 2008 through July 2024 for about $30
What Should I Do?
The CPSC and Thermos urge consumers to stop using the recalled food jars and bottles immediately and contact Thermos for a free remedy:
- SK3000 and SK3020 Food Jars: Thermos will send a free replacement pressure relief stopper. Consumers will be asked to throw away the old stopper and submit a photo of the disposed stopper at support.thermos.com.
- SK3010 Sportsman Bottles: Consumers will be asked to return the recalled bottle to Thermos using a prepaid shipping label and will receive a replacement bottle.
- Do not return the product to the store — the remedy must be processed through Thermos directly.
- For questions, call Thermos at 662-563-6822, Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. CT.
- Full recall details are available at the CPSC recall page.
If you were struck in the eye, face, or any other part of your body by an ejecting Thermos stopper, you may have legal options beyond the manufacturer’s recall remedy. Contacting a product liability lawyer does not affect your ability to participate in the recall.
