Graco Recalls Pack ‘n Play Inclined Sleepers

In December 2020, Graco recalled about 51,000 Pack ‘n Play Inclined Sleepers because babies can suffocate to death when they roll over, or under other circumstances.

Was Your Pack ‘n Play Recalled?

The recall involves the following Pack ‘n Play products:

  • Graco Pack ‘n Play Day2Dream Playard & Bedside Sleeper — Sold between November 2017 and September 2020 — Model 2034085, 2048753 and 2053215
  • Graco Pack ‘n Play Nuzzle Nest Playard — Sold between May 2015 and December 2018 — Model #1947177 and 1896392
  • Graco Pack ‘n Play Everest Playard — Sold between September 2015 and December 2018 — Model 1946902 and 1946903
  • Graco Pack ‘n Play Rock ‘n Grow Playard — Sold between December 2019 and April 2020 — Model 2105055

When Will Graco Recall Other Dangerous Inclined Baby Sleepers?

Graco still sells several inclined sleeper accessories that have not been recalled. Back in March 2020, Rep. Carolyn Maloney questioned “the design and safety” of Graco’s Care Station Playard products, which include an inclined sleep component. Graco also still sells products like the Graco Pack ‘n Play Newborn Seat DLX Playard with an inclined seat accessory.

Can I Still Use My Pack ‘n Play?

According to Graco’s recall notice, the inclined sleeper accessory is the only part of the Pack ‘n Play that is being recalled. Consumers can still use the Pack ‘n Play playard, changing station, and bassinet without the inclined sleeper accessory.

What is the Problem?

Around 100 babies have suffocated to death in inclined sleep products since 2005. Graco did not report any injuries or deaths in the recalled Pack ‘n Play Inclined Sleepers as of December 2020, but the products are very similar to other products that are linked to tragic deaths.

How Do Babies Suffocate in Inclined Sleepers?

Many babies have suffocated and died in inclined sleepers when they rolled from their back onto their stomach or side, which caused their mouth to press against the fabric sides of the product. Inclined sleepers also pose a risk of “positional asphyxia,” which is when a baby’s airway is compressed because their chin touches their chest.
