Listeria monocytogenes is a bacteria that can cause severe, life-threatening food poisoning infections. The illness is most serious when the bacteria spreads beyond the gastrointestinal system. Pregnant women may have only a mild flu-like illness before suffering a miscarriage, stillbirth, or deadly infection of their newborn.
