Why Is the CPSC Warning People About Houswise Fire Pits?

In July 2026, the CPSC warned consumers to immediately stop using and dispose of Houswise Tabletop Fire Pits. The agency described the hazard in its official notice:

“Using Houswise Tabletop Fire Pits can result in uncontrolled pool fires where flames burn across the surface of pooled or spilled alcohol, as well as flame jetting from fuel containers, resulting in serious or fatal burns.”

The problem is linked to a safety hazard in the design of these fire pits. The user must pour liquid fuel, such as isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol or ethanol/bioethanol, into the fire pit and then ignite the pooled liquid in the same place it was poured. These fuels burn at temperatures over 1,600°F and can inflict 3rd-degree burns in less than 1 second.

What Is Flame Jetting?

Flame-jetting happens when a flame ignites the vapor inside a fuel container as fuel is being poured, setting off an explosion that propels flames and burning liquid onto the person pouring or anyone standing nearby. With Houswise fire pits, this can happen during refueling because a small residual flame in the pit can be nearly invisible.

How Many People Were Injured?

The CPSC has received 7 reports of injuries linked to Houswise Tabletop Fire Pits, including third-degree burns. Those injuries came out of more than 2 dozen reports of flame jetting, fuel leaking outside of the fire pit, and unexpectedly high flames.

Third-degree burns destroy the full thickness of the skin and often require skin grafts, hospitalization in a burn unit, and months of painful recovery. Many burn survivors are left with permanent scarring on visible areas like the face, hands, and arms.

Why Won’t Houswise Recall the Fire Pits?

Furmia LLC, the manufacturer of Houswise Tabletop Fire Pits, has not agreed to recall these products or offer any remedy to consumers. That refusal means there is no refund, repair, or replacement available.

Which Houswise Fire Pits Are Affected?

The CPSC warning covers at least 53,500 Houswise Tabletop Fire Pits with the following characteristics:

  • Model names: Vesper, Astra, Altair, and Quad
  • Rectangular, round, or square bases
  • Colors including marble, black, light gray, and dark gray
  • Sold with a variety of accessories, including skewers and cheese boards
  • Sold online at Houswise.com, Amazon.com, Walmart.com, and other websites since March 2023

If you bought a tabletop fire pit online in the last few years, there is a real chance it is one of these units. The model name may appear on the product packaging or your order history.

Have Other Tabletop Fire Pits Been Recalled?

Yes. In October 2024, about 89,500 Colsen-branded tabletop fire pits were recalled after the CPSC received 31 reports of flame jetting and flames escaping the container, which were linked to 19 burn injuries.

In 2025, the CPSC also issued a broader consumer alert covering alcohol and other liquid-burning fire pits that violate voluntary safety standards. That alert cited 2 deaths and dozens of serious burn injuries. The Houswise warning is part of this same pattern of dangerous open-reservoir, liquid-fuel fire pits.

What Should I Do?

The CPSC urges consumers to stop using Houswise Tabletop Fire Pits immediately and dispose of them.

Safety officials also warned people not to sell or give away these hazardous products. Incidents involving injury or product defect can be reported to the CPSC at SaferProducts.gov.

If you were injured, it may also help your potential claim to keep proof of purchase, photographs of the fire pit and fuel container, and records of your medical treatment before speaking with a lawyer.
