METASONO Heated Insoles Linked to 10 Burn Injuries and 14 Fires
In July 2026, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) warned consumers to immediately stop using about 1,173 METASONO and MEATSONO heated insoles due to fire and burn hazards.
Safety officials warned that the lithium-ion battery inside the heated insoles can explode and ignite, even when the products are not being used.
How Many People Were Burned?
The agency said it has received 14 reports of fires, explosions, and other thermal incidents tied to the insoles, including 10 burn injuries.
Because the insole sits directly under the foot inside a closed shoe or boot, a burning battery can injure the foot, ankle, and lower leg before the footwear can be pulled off.
How Serious Were These Injuries
Several of the reported injuries were 2nd- and 3rd-degree burns that were serious enough to require skin grafts. A 3rd-degree burn destroys every layer of skin, and skin graft surgery means a second wound at the donor site (where healthy skin is removed and transplanted onto the burned area of skin). This is a painful process that often requires months of recovery.
The reported injuries include:
- Second-degree burns
- Third-degree burns
- Burns severe enough to require skin grafts
What Is the Problem With METASONO Heated Insoles?
METASONO and MEATSONO heated insoles are battery-powered insoles that were advertised online to keep feet warm inside shoes and boots. The danger is the lithium-ion battery is built into the heel of the insole.
The CPSC warned that the battery can fail without warning, and without the product even being switched on. But if the battery explodes when it is inside a laced-up boot or shoe, there is almost no time for a victim to remove their shoe before a devastating burn injury occurs.
The CPSC describes the defect this way:
“The internal lithium-ion battery can explode and ignite, even when the insoles are turned off, posing a risk of serious burn injury and fire hazard.”
How Do I Identify METASONO Heated Insoles?
There is no model number to check, but the CPSC describes the affected insoles by their appearance and where they were sold. Look for these details:
- Brand marking: “METASONO” printed on both sides of the insole
- Appearance: Primarily navy blue with a multicolored design across the insole
- Battery: A lithium-ion battery built into the heel area
- Controls: Operated by a separate remote control
- Where sold: Amazon.com and eBay.com from July 2023 through July 2026, priced between $28 and $70
The product is also listed under the alternate spelling “MEATSONO,” so check your order history for either name.
Why Is There No METASONO Recall or Refund?
Unlike many product hazards, this one did not end in a recall. The insoles were manufactured in China by a company doing business as METASONO-US, and the CPSC reports that the manufacturer has been unresponsive to its requests for a recall or for information about the product.
When a foreign manufacturer ignores U.S. regulators, the agency can issue a public safety warning on its own, but it cannot force a company overseas to offer refunds or repairs.
For an injured consumer, that means there is no manufacturer refund program to sign up for. It does not mean there is no one to hold accountable. METASONO Is Part of a Pattern of Heated Insole Fires
METASONO is not the first heated insole the CPSC has flagged for lithium-ion battery fires. The agency has issued a series of similar warnings since 2025. For example:
