What Happened With the Lakkzoom Water Heaters?

In July 2026, the CPSC warned consumers to stop using Lakkzoom immersion water heaters immediately, and the U.S. Department of Justice filed a complaint in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia seeking a court-ordered mandatory recall. The agency reported 235 fires connected to the roughly 98,000 units that reached American homes.

The heaters were not pulled from the market voluntarily. Regulators had to ask a federal court to force a recall, which means owners cannot count on a manufacturer refund or repair program and are being told to dispose of the devices instead.

Why Are Lakkzoom Immersion Heaters a Fire Risk?

The CPSC describes the defect in its warning notice as follows:

“The heaters can quickly ignite within minutes when they are partially or completely out of water, posing a risk of serious injury and death due to fire.”

According to the federal complaint, the CPSC investigated several of the reported fires and its own testing showed the heaters could catch fire within minutes in certain circumstances. In plain terms, an immersion heater that ignites seconds after it is switched on gives a person almost no time to react before flames reach towels, countertops, or nearby bedding.

How Many Fires Have Been Reported?

The CPSC is aware of 235 reports of fires involving the Lakkzoom heaters. The agency did not publish a specific count of injuries or deaths, but it warns that the devices pose a risk of serious injury and death, and the Justice Department is pursuing the matter as an imminent hazard to the public.

If you were burned, or if a fire damaged your home after one of these heaters ignited, your experience lines up with the pattern federal investigators documented across hundreds of reports.

How Do I Know If I Have an Affected Lakkzoom Heater?

The CPSC warning covers immersion water heaters that consist of metal tubes with circular or heart-shaped holes and plastic endcaps in black, yellow, or pink. The brand name “Lakkzoom” and one of the affected model numbers may appear on your purchase receipt. Affected models include:

  • Model 1500W
  • Model 2000W
  • Model HT1500W (also identified as MJ-R13)
  • Model HT2000W

The heaters were sold on Amazon.com and eBay.com between September 2022 and July 2026. If you bought an inexpensive immersion or bucket water heater from either marketplace during that window, there is a real chance yours is one of the units federal regulators flagged.

Why Is This CPSC Action So Unusual?

The Consumer Product Safety Act lets the government sue to force a recall of products that present an imminent and unreasonable risk of death, serious illness, or severe personal injury. The CPSC rarely invokes that power, and this is its first use of Section 12 imminent hazard authority since 1987.

CPSC Acting Chairman Peter Feldman connected the decision to the severity of the danger, noting it is the Commission’s first use of that authority in nearly four decades. For an injured consumer, the takeaway is straightforward: federal officials considered these heaters dangerous enough to justify an emergency legal step they had not taken in a generation.

What Should I Do If I Own a Lakkzoom Water Heater?

The CPSC advises consumers to stop using the immersion water heaters immediately and dispose of them. Because this is a contested court action and not a voluntary recall, there is currently no manufacturer refund or repair program to rely on.

You can report a fire, injury, or product defect to the CPSC at SaferProducts.gov, and you can read the government’s full account in the Justice Department complaint announcement and the CPSC warning notice. If a Lakkzoom heater caught fire in your home, keeping the device, photos, receipts, and any fire or medical reports can help a lawyer evaluate your claim.
