Sprouts and Food Poisoning Outbreaks

Sprouts are one of the most common sources of food poisoning outbreaks, according to the CDC. Between 1990 and 2009, sprouts were linked to 31 outbreaks of food poisoning involving 2,022 people who fell ill. Many more outbreaks have been linked to sprouts since 2009, plus hundreds of illnesses.

What is the Problem?

Warm and wet conditions used for sprouting seeds are also ideal for rapid bacteria growth, including E. coli, Salmonella, Listeria monocytogenes, and more. These bacteria can be killed by thoroughly cooking sprouts, but the problem is that many people eat sprouts that are raw or only lightly cooked.
