UPDATE: Justice Dept. Orders Kidde to Pay $12 Million for Delaying and Misrepresenting Fire Extinguisher Defects
In January 2021, the Department of Justice announced that a federal judge ordered Kidde to pay a $12 million penalty for waiting years to tell safety officials that millions of fire extinguishers could fail to work in an emergency, and the nozzles could detach and injure people. Before the first recall in 2015, Kidde was also accused of “significantly under-reporting … the scope and nature of the defect and risk, and the number of products and models affected.”
Kidde Fire Extinguisher Recall
In November 2017, Kidde recalled 40.5 million fire extinguishers with plastic-handles because they may not work in an emergency. The recall was announced 3 years after a person died in a car fire because emergency responders could not get the fire extinguisher to work.
Fire Extinguisher Malfunctions and Injuries
There have also been 391 reports of failed or limited activation of the fire extinguisher, or nozzle detachment, as well as 16 injuries (smoke inhalation or minor burns), and 91 reports of property damage.
What is the Problem?
According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recall:
The fire extinguishers can become clogged or require excessive force to discharge and can fail to activate during a fire emergency. In addition, the nozzle can detach with enough force to pose an impact hazard.”
Was My Fire Extinguisher Recalled?
The recall covers 134 models of fire extinguishers that have been sold since January 1, 1973 — including both Kidde plastic-handle fire extinguishers and Kidde push-button Pindicator fire extinguishers. The recall also involves Kidde fire extinguishers that were previously recalled in March 2009 and February 2015.
Where Were They Sold?
They were sold at many retail stores, such as Montgomery Ward, Sears, Walmart, Costco, Home Depot, and online. Some commercial trucks, RVs and boats were also sold with the fire extinguishers.
