What Happened?
In July 2026, Greenworks Tools recalled approximately 554,780 Kobalt 24V and 48V yard power tools that use lithium-ion batteries with a USB-C charging port.
The fire hazard is linked to the lithium-ion batteries, which were sold both in tool kits and individually (for the 3.0Ah and 6.0Ah versions). The recall involves a variety of tools that were sold at Lowe’ in early 2026, including Kobalt trimmers, blowers, mowers, chainsaws or pruning saws.
What Is the Problem With the Kobalt USB-C Batteries?
Charging the lithium-ion batteries through the USB-C port while they are inserted in the tool can make the batteries short-circuit. A short-circuit in a lithium-ion cell can trigger rapid overheating and fire, which is why the agency describes this as a risk of serious injury:
“Charging the lithium-ion batteries through the USB-C port while the batteries are inserted in the yard power tools can cause the batteries to short-circuit, posing a risk of serious injury from fire hazard.”
How Many Fires Have Been Reported?
There have been at least 34 reports of the Greenworks Yard Tool batteries overheating, producing smoke, sparking or catching fire while inserted in the tool and charging through the USB-C port. There have been no reports of injuries or property damage.
How To Identify Recalled Kobalt Tools and Batteries
The recall covers Kobalt 24V and 48V (2x24V) yard power tools sold with USB-C batteries in 3.0Ah, 4.0Ah, 5.0Ah, 6.0Ah and 8.0Ah capacities. Recalled items and model numbers include:
- 24V trimmer and blower combo kit KOC 1024-06 (battery KB 324-06)
- 48V 17″ push mower KM 4224A-06 and 21″ mowers KM 5224A-06, KMS 6224A-06 and KMSD 8224A-06
- 48V 14″ chainsaw kit KCS 4224-06 and 14″ chainsaw KCS 1448-06
- 24V and 48V blowers KHB 324-06, KHB 4248-06 and KHB 6048-06
- 24V pruning saw kit KMCS 2024-06 and power cleaner kit KPC 3024-06
- String trimmer kits KST 2024-06 and KMS 3248-06, and trimmer KMS 1524-06
- Stand-alone batteries KB 324-06 and KB 624-06 and 2-packs KB 324D-06 and KB 624D-06
Where Were They Sold?
The tools were sold at Lowe’s stores nationwide and online at Lowes.com from January 2026 through May 2026 for between $20 and $482.
What Should I Do?
Stop charging the batteries through the USB-C port while they are inserted in the yard power tools. To get a replacement battery, contact Greenworks. You can also register for the replacement battery on the company’s Kobalt product recall page.
Greenworks is providing a replacement battery without the USB-C port, a charger adapter, a warning label to affix to the tool, an updated product manual and a prepaid shipping label for returning the recalled batteries.
