LG Electric Ranges Recalled for Knobs Linked to 28 Fires
In February 2025, LG recalled about 500,000 electric ranges because the knobs can turn on from accidental contact by humans or pets, which poses a fire hazard and a risk of serious burn injuries or deaths.
What is the Problem?
Front-mounted knobs on LG electric ranges can be activated by accidental contact by humans or pets, posing a fire hazard.
3 Pet Deaths, 28 Fires Linked to LG Electric Ranges
LG recalled 500,000 electric stoves after at least 28 house fires, 8 burn injuries, 3 pet deaths, and $340,000 in property damage. The recall is for LG slide-in electric ranges, and freestanding ranges, that were sold by Best Buy, Costco, Home Depot, Lowe’s and other stores.
What Happened?
The Consumer Product Safety Commission said it has received at least 86 reports of people and pets accidentally turning on the front knobs of the stove. These LG ranges have caused at least 28 fires.
According to the CPSC warning:
“At least five fires caused extensive property damage totaling over $340,000. At least eight minor injuries have been reported, including burns, and there have been reports of three fires involving pet deaths.”
Can I Get a Refund?
No. Instead of a refund or exchange, LG is sending free stickers to remind customers about the “Control Lock” feature that can prevent the knobs from accidentally turning on the burners.
Where Were They Sold?
The recalled LG Slide-In Ranges, and Freestanding Ranges with front-mounted knobs were sold at Best Buy, Costco, The Home Depot, Lowe’s, and other appliance stores nationwide and online at LG.com.
Depending upon the model, the ranges were sold from 2015 through January 2025 for between $1,400 and $2,650.
What Should I Do?
To check if your LG Electric Range is part of the recall, you can find the Serial Number and Model inside the oven door, or in the drawer located on the bottom of the oven, and enter the numbers at the website https://lgecares.com/rangerecall/.
LG is urging consumers to use the Control Lock / Lock Out function on the range control panel. This feature can disable activation of the heating elements when the range is not in use.
Samsung Recalls 1.1 Million Electric Stoves for Fire Hazard
The fire hazard is not limited to the knobs on LG Electric Stoves. Samsung has also been hit by similar class action lawsuits. In August 2024, about 1.1 million Samsung Electric Ranges were recalled after more than 250 fires and 40 injuries were reported when people or pets turned on the front knobs.
LG Electric Range Knob Lawsuits
Class action lawsuits claim that LG has known since at least as early as 2021 that its electric ranges are defective because the knobs turn on too easily. Lawsuits claim that LG failed to warn consumers about the safety hazard.
Class Action Lawsuit Filed in New Jersey
One of the first class action lawsuits was filed in 2022 by Pedro B., a man from New Jersey. According to his lawsuit, he was eating dinner when he smelled smoke. He went to the kitchen, and found an UberEATS bag on fire next to his LG Electric Range. His house filled with smoke, but no one was injured.
