What is the problem?

In July 2018, the FDA reported an outbreak of Cyclospora infections that is linked to salads from McDonald’s restaurants.

How Many People Are Sick?

As of July 26, the CDC reports that 263 people in 15 states have been infected with Cyclospora, with 11 of the victims hospitalized and no deaths.

Since mid-May 2018, the outbreak has sickened people in South Dakota, Nebraska, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Kentucky, Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Tennessee, Virginia, Florida, and Connecticut.

McDonald’s Stops Selling Salads in 14 States

In response to the outbreak, McDonald’s stopped selling salads in more than 3,000 locations in the following 14 states: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.

What is Cyclospora?

Cyclospora cayetanensis is a single-celled parasite that causes an intestinal infection from eating contaminated food or drinking water.

Symptoms of infection begin an average of 7 days after ingestion of the infective form of the parasite, and may include the following:

  • Watery diarrhea (most common)
  • Loss of appetite
  • Weight loss
  • Stomach cramping or pain
  • Bloating
  • Increased gas
  • Nausea
  • Fatigue

Other symptoms that may occur but are less common include the following:

  • Vomiting
  • Low-grade fever
  • Body aches
  • Headache
  • Flu-like symptoms
