Cyclospora Parasite Outbreak Linked to Bagged Salads

In June 2020, dozens of people in the Midwest were infected with Cyclospora parasites after eating bagged salads from Jewel-Osco, ALDI, and Hy-Vee grocery stores.

According to an investigation by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the outbreak began on May 11 and illnesses were reported in Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, and Minnesota.

Jewel-Osco Recalls Signature Farms Garden Salad

Jewel-Osco (part of Albertsons) issued a recall for Signature Farms® Garden Salad sold in its stores in Illinois, Indiana, and Iowa due to a risk of Cyclospora contamination. The recall was issued in cooperation with Fresh Express.

The recalled Signature Farms® Garden Salad was sold in 12-ounce bags in the Produce section. The bags have BEST IF USED BY dates of May 16 through July 4 (5-16-20 through 7-04-20).

The BEST IF USED BY date is printed on the top right corner of the front of the package. The product UPC code of 21130 98135 is on the back of the package. It is labeled with the unique plant number S5417.

What is Cyclospora?

Cyclospora cayetanensis is a parasite that is transmitted in feces. People who eat contaminated food or water can develop a gastrointestinal illness called “cyclosporiasis.”

Early Signs & Long-Term Risks of Cyclospora Infection

Cyclospora infection commonly causes diarrhea. The bowel movements are frequent, watery, and explosive. Diarrhea can persist for months (and seem to come and go) until it is properly treated.

Victims may suffer from extreme fatigue and weight-loss until they are cured. Unfortunately, diagnosis requires special tests, which can delay treatment until the patient’s condition is so serious that they must be hospitalized.

Symptoms of Cyclosporiasis

  • Diarrhea
  • Loss of appetite
  • Weight loss
  • Stomach cramps/pain
  • Bloating
  • Increased gas
  • Nausea
  • Fatigue
  • Vomiting
  • Body aches
  • Headache
  • Low-grade fever
  • Other flu-like symptoms
