Bagged Salads Linked to Outbreak of Cyclospora Parasite Infections

In July 2020, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that over 500 people were infected with the Cyclospora parasite after eating bagged salads from Hy-Vee, ALDI, Walmart, Jewel-Osco, and other grocery stores in these 8 Midwestern states (Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, and Wisconsin). The outbreak began on May 11, 2020.

ALDI Salad Recall

June 22, 2020 — In association with Fresh Express INc., ALDI issued a voluntary recall for Little Salad Bar Garden Salad due to a possible risk of Cyclospora parasite infections.

What ALDI Salad Was Recalled for Cyclospora?

The recalled Little Salad Bar Garden Salad was sold in a 12 oz. bag, has a UPC code of 4099100082975 and “Best If Used By” dates of May 1 through June 29.

Where Was Recalled ALDI Salad Sold

ALDI immediately removed the recalled salads from stores in Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin.

What is Cyclospora?

Cyclospora cayetanensis is a parasite that causes a gastrointestinal food poisoning illness in people who eat contaminated food or water. It is generally transmitted through feces.

What Are the Signs of Cyclosporiasis?

The symptoms of a Cyclospora infection generally take about 1 week to appear. The most common symptom is diarrhea, with frequent bouts of explosive, watery bowel movements. Left untreated, diarrhea can persist for months, seeming to come and go. A prolonged infection can cause a person to feel very tired and suffer severe weight-loss.
