Mounjaro Lawsuit for Stomach Paralysis

In August 2023, a lawsuit was filed by a woman from Louisiana who claims that she developed stomach paralysis after taking Mounjaro and Ozempic.

What Happened?

According to the Mounjaro lawsuit, her gastrointestinal symptoms were so serious, she had to be hospitalized several times, and lost teeth due to extreme vomiting, according to the lawsuit.

Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk are accused of failing to warn about the risk of stomach paralysis, which occurs when food slows down or stops moving normally through the digestive system.

The labels on Mounjaro and Ozempic do warn about nausea and stomach pain as potential side effects, but not stomach paralysis.

According to the Mounjaro Prescribing Information, Eli Lilly warns: “[Mounjaro] Tirzepatide delays gastric emptying. The delay is largest after the first dose and this effect diminishes over time.”

What is Mounjaro?

Mounjaro® (generic: tirzepatide) is an injectable prescription medicine that can help control blood-sugar levels in adults with type-2 diabetes. It also triggers dramatic weight-loss that is even more significant than other diabetes drugs, like Ozempic.

Does Mounjaro Help With Weight-Loss?

Ozempic and Wegovy only target a single receptor, but Mounjaro activates two receptors at the same time, which seems to cause even more weight-loss. The receptors are glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP).

In studies, people on the highest does of Mounjaro (15-milligrams) lost 21% of their body weight — or 12 pounds more than patients on Ozempic.

How Does Mounjaro Work?

Mounjaro works by mimicking hormones that suppress appetite and make patients feel more full. It also slows down the rate at which the stomach empties, which keeps patients feeling full much longer after they eat a meal. This helps prevent over-eating, which can make it a lot easier for people to lose weight. It also helps control blood-sugar levels, which helps treat type-2 diabetes.

What is Stomach Paralysis?

Stomach paralysis, also known as gastroparesis, is when food slows down or stops moving from the stomach into the intestines.

Stomach paralysis sometimes causes people to develop a bezoar, which is a solid mass of old, partly-digested food. It can cause symptoms like nausea or vomiting, or completely block the stomach and prevent food from entering the intestines.

Mounjaro and Stomach Paralysis

People with diabetes are at risk of stomach paralysis because uncontrolled high blood-sugar levels can damage the nerves that tell the stomach to empty when it is full of food. The problem is that Mounjaro could make this problem even worse by mimicking hormones that slow down the movement of food out of the stomach.

Signs & Symptoms of Gastroparesis

The symptoms of stomach paralysis may include:

  • Feeling full after eating only a eating a few bites of food
  • Continuing to feel full long after eating
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Bloating
  • Abdominal pain
  • Weight-loss
