October 20, 2023 — A lawsuit has been filed against Target and Sunbeam Products by a woman who was burned by a Mr. Coffee 10-Cup Coffee Maker.
The plaintiff, Jennifer S., is a woman from Pennsylvania who claims that she was seriously burned in November 2022 when the stainless-steel carafe broke and spilled hot coffee onto her legs.
The incident involved a Mr. Coffee 10-Cup Programmable Coffee Maker (Model BVMC-DT100), which is advertised to heat coffee up to 205ºF with the “Optimal Brew” setting.
She claims to have suffered 2nd-degree burns on her left and right legs, including her thigh, foot, ankle, and toes, after the defective carafe “suddenly fell apart from the handle” and spilled hot coffee.
Her lawsuit also claims that the scalding, burning-hot coffee caused “severe and likely permanent injuries.”
She is seeking more than $150,000 in compensation for her pain and suffering, medical injuries, and other damages, including punitive damages against the manufacturer for selling a defective product.
Her lawsuit was filed against Target and Sunbeam Products (doing business as Mr. Coffee) on September 14, 2023 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania — Case 2:23-cv-02538-GAM.
