Target Recalls Weighted Blankets for Suffocation Risk

In December 2022, Target recalled about 204,000 Pillowfort® Weighted Blankets because children can unzip the waterproof cover, climb inside, become trapped, and suffocate to death.

What is the Problem?

Target said it received 4 reports of children who unzipped the cover and became trapped inside the weighted blankets, including the two little girls who died.

What Happened?

In April 2022, a 6-year-old girl and her 4-year-old sister suffocated to death after becoming trapped inside the weighted blankets, according to the recall. The deaths were reported in Camp Lejeune, a Marine Corps Base located in North Carolina.

What Blankets Were Recalled?

The recall involves approximately 204,000 Pillowfort Weighted Blankets that were sold at Target from December 2018 through September 2022 at Target stores and online at Target.com.

The blankets weigh about 6 pounds, measured 60 inches by 40 inches, and came with a zippered cover that was removable, waterproof, and washable.

The blankets came in 8 prints or colors: unicorn white, space navy, pink, blue, gray, buffalo plaid red, blue constellation, and unicorn pink.

What Should I Do?

These deadly weighted blankets are in thousands of homes across the U.S., where they pose a hidden and deadly safety hazard for children. Target is offering a full refund to customers who return the blankets.

Visit any store or contact Target at 800-440-0680 from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. CT daily to receive a prepaid return label to return the blankets.
