UPDATE: Portable Murphy Beds Recalled After 11 People Injured

In December 2023, about 12,000 portable Murphy beds were recalled after at least 11 people were injured. The recall involves “Windsor Queen Xtrabed Mobile Murphy Beds” that were sold by Wayfair.com from November 2016 through April 2023.

At least 11 people suffered injuries to their shoulders, back, legs, knees or feet when the cabinet on the front of the Xtrabed broke off and fell when opening the bed from the front. One person was also bruised in a tip-over incident.

Another 8,200 Murphy Beds Recalled After 62 People Injured by Falling Beds

In September 2022, around 8,200 Murphy beds were recalled by Cyme Tech after 146 reports of the beds falling or breaking, including 62 people who were injured.

The problem is that “the wall beds can break or detach from the wall and fall onto those nearby, posing serious impact and crush hazards,” according to the recall notice.

The reported injuries include broken bones, bruising, lacerations, concussions and other injuries. No deaths were reported, but falling Murphy beds pose a risk of life-threatening injuries and death.

The recall involves full-sized and queen-sized Murphy beds sold online under the brand names:

  • Ivy Bronx
  • Orren Ellis
  • Stellar Home Furniture
  • Wade Logan

They were sold online at Wayfair, AllModern, Amazon, Cymax, Overstock and Wal-Mart.com from February 2014 through May 2022 for between $1,200 and $1,500.

What is a Murphy Bed?

Murphy beds (also called “wall beds”) are a convenient way to store a bed upright against a wall, usually behind doors that look like a cabinet. This is useful for guest rooms and people who live in small spaces, so they can fold away the bed when they do not need it.

What is the Problem?

The problem is that Murphy beds can also be extremely dangerous, especially if they are not installed properly or manufactured poorly.

What Is the Risk?

When a Murphy bed falls off the wall unexpectedly, anyone nearby can suffer severe injuries or death — especially children or older adults. Some of the reported injuries include:

  • Death
  • Spinal injuries
  • Broken bones
  • Crush injuries
  • Broken bones
  • Bruises
  • Lacerations and bleeding
  • Impact injuries
  • And more
