Nutri-Pot Lawsuit Filed by Woman in North Carolina

In February 2021, a North Carolina woman named Jeanna M.G. filed a lawsuit against NuWave after she was burned by her 6-Quart Nutri-Pot Digital Pressure Cooker (Model #33101) on February 26, 2019.

The lawsuit claims that “scalding hot contents” blew out of the pot when she opened the lid. She blames her injuries on defective safety features — specifically the “Sure-Lock® Safety System.”

The Sure-Lock® Safety System was advertised to keep her safe by locking the lid until all of the pressure was released. Instead, she was able to easily twist open the lid, which immediately resulted in “serious and substantial burn injuries.”

Her Nutri-Pot Pressure Cooker Lawsuit was filed against NuWave LLC on February 1, 2021 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois (Eastern Division) — Case Number 1:21-cv-00562.

What is the Nutri-Pot Pressure Cooker?

The Nutri-Pot Pressure Cooker is a kitchen appliance that is manufactured by NuWave LLC, a company based in Illinois.

The Nutri-Pot is advertise to cook food faster and more efficiently than a traditional stovetop pot by using an electric heating element. The machine heats up liquid in the pot, traps steam inside the pot, and quickly reaches temperatures up to 250ºF to cook food within minutes.

What is the Problem?

Pressure cookers have a reputation for exploding and causing devastating burn injuries in the kitchen. To reassure consumers, NuWave claims that the Nutri-Pot has a variety of safety features. Unfortunately, lawsuits claim they might not work.

Safety Features of the Nutri-Pot

The Nutri-Pot is commonly advertised in infomercials and videos with statements about safety features.

For example, NuWave published a YouTube video entitled “NuWave 8-qt Nutri-Pot Pressure Cooker with Pot, Glass Lid, & Rack on QVC,” which includes the following statement about the locking lid:

“You lock it; it has a Sure-Lock System. Once this is locked down, it is locked down. You don’t have to worry about pressure cooker blowing up or anything like this.”

Lawsuits Claim “Sure-Lock Safety System” is Defective

NuWave is accused of “misleading the consumer into believing that the pressure cookers are reasonably safe,” by falsely advertising the effectiveness of the Sure-Lock® Safety System, according to lawsuits.

Furthermore, although many consumers have been seriously burned when they were able to easily open the lid on their Nutri-Pot while it was still pressurized, NuWave has failed to issue a recall, or redesign the Nutri-Pot with a lid that actually locks when the unit is pressurized.

Lawyers claim that NuWave’s “representations about ‘safety’ are not just misleading, they are flatly wrong, and put innocent consumers like Plaintiff directly in harm’s way.”
