Lawsuit Filed By Woman Hospitalized After Taking Weight-Loss Drugs
In September 2024, a lawsuit was filed by a mother from Pennsylvania who was hospitalized with an intestinal obstruction after taking Ozempic for weight-loss and diabetes.
What Happened?
The Ozempic lawsuit was filed by Juanita G., a woman who said she took the weight-loss medication for several months before developing an intestinal blockage.
In October 2023, she said her husband found her unconscious on the floor and rushed her to the hospital. She was diagnosed with a severe intestinal blockage that caused tissue death in her large intestine.
She underwent emergency surgery to remove the blockage and dead tissue. While in recovery, she went into cardiac arrest and nearly died. Doctors also removed her colon, so she must use an ileostomy bag.
Her lawsuit accuses the pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk of failing to warn patients about Ozempic side effects like intestinal blockages, ileus, stomach paralysis, gastroparesis, and more.
Ozempic Lawsuits Filed for Stomach Paralysis
Ozempic lawsuits have been filed by people who developed stomach paralysis, a side effect that occurs when the movement of food slows down or stops. Stomach paralysis is also known as “gastroparesis” and it can be life-threatening if it causes a blockage in the stomach or intestines.
What is the Problem?
The label on Ozempic warns patients that it can cause “delayed gastric emptying.” In the lawsuits, injured people claim that Novo Nordisk did not properly warn patients about the risk of complications when the movement of food slows down too much, resulting in a life-threatening intestinal blockage, stomach paralysis, or bowel injury.
What is Ileus?
Ileus is the medical term for blocked intestines, which means that food and liquids can’t move through the body. It is a life-threatening emergency that must be treated in a hospital to prevent severe complications or even death. Emergency surgery or another procedure may be necessary to remove the blockage.
What is the Risk?
Left untreated, an intestinal obstruction can cause tissue death. This occurs when the blockage cuts off the blood-supply to the intestine, which causes part of the intestinal wall to die. Intestinal obstructions can lead to serious issues like sepsis (blood infections) or death.
Untreated Intestinal Blockage Can Cause Hole
Another potential risk is an intestinal perforation, or hole in the intestines. This can cause food and bacteria to leak out of the digestive system, resulting in infections and inflammation.
Ozempic Label Updated to Include Ileus (Blocked Intestines)
In September 2023, the FDA updated the label on Ozempic to include warnings about patients who were diagnosed with ileus, a severe gastrointestinal disorder that is also known as an intestinal blockage.
Because these reports were voluntary and came from a population of unknown size, “it is not always possible to reliably estimate their frequency or establish a causal relationship to drug exposure,” according to the FDA.
Symptoms of Intestinal Blockages
The symptoms of an intestinal blockage may include:
- Severe abdominal pain
- Vomiting
- Abdominal swelling (distention)
- Felling of fullness in your belly
- Stomach pain
- Cramping
- Breath odor
- Constipation
- Diarrhea
- Feeling gassy, but unable to pass gas
