About the Petzl Ice Axe Recall
On March 26, 2026, the CPSC announced a recall of about 4,200 Petzl Nomic and Ergonomic ice climbing axes sold in the United States, plus about 1,160 sold in Canada. The recall was issued because the ice axe shaft can break at the handle during use, posing a fall hazard and the risk of serious injury or death.
Were Any Injuries Reported?
No. Petzl America received 26 reports of the shafts breaking. No injuries had been reported as of the recall announcement date, but a shaft failure during active ice climbing carries obvious and serious risk of a fall.
The recalled axes were sold from December 2017 through March 2022 for between $380 and $440 at REI, Moosejaw Mountaineering, and other specialty stores, as well as online at petzl.com, REI.com, and Backcountry.com.
Which Products Are Recalled?
The recall covers the following models:
- Petzl Nomic Ice Climbing Axe — Model U021AA00, serial numbers 17L 0000000 000 through 20F 9999999 999. Black aluminum shaft and steel pick.
- Petzl Ergonomic Ice Climbing Axe — Model U022AA00, serial numbers 18F 0000000 000 through 21L 9999999 999. Orange aluminum shaft and steel pick.
The serial number for both models is printed on a label on the upper portion of the shaft. Both models have a reinforced plastic grip.
What Should You Do?
Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled ice axes. Petzl America is offering a free repair kit that includes a new shaft, hardware for the grip rest, and assembly instructions.
To receive the repair kit, register at Petzl’s recall registration page to request a prepaid shipping label to return the shaft. Petzl America can also be contacted toll-free at 877-807-3805, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. MT, or by email at Returns@petzl.com.
Petzl Ice Axe Lawsuit Information
Ice climbing is an inherently demanding activity, and climbers trust their equipment to hold. A shaft that breaks at the handle during use can deprive a climber of their primary anchor point at a critical moment. There were 26 reported shaft failures documented before the recall, which could be relevant to any potential product liability claim.
Consumers who were injured when a recalled Petzl Nomic or Ergonomic ice axe shaft broke may have legal options. No injuries were reported, but anyone who believes this defect may have contributed to an ice climbing accident should contact an attorney right away.
