ProPort Plastic Implantable Port Recalled for Safety Risks

In March 2025, the FDA announced a Class 1 recall for the Smiths Medical ProPort Plastic Implantable Port because it “may cause serious injury or death if you continue to use it,” according to the FDA.

What Happened?

ProPort Plastic Implantable Ports were recalled by Smiths Medical due to a manufacturing defect that may cause the plastic port housing and port reservoir to separate before, during, or after implantation.

What is the Risk?

Using a recalled ProPort Plastic Implantable Port may cause severe injuries or deaths, according to the recall. The health risks include:

  • Complications from the delay or interruption of life-saving therapies
  • Damage or scarring to skin or tissue surrounding the port from contact with leaking intravenous medications such as chemotherapy
  • Air entering the bloodstream (air embolism)
  • Death

How Many People Were Injured?

Two injuries were reported, according to the FDA. No deaths were reported, but there is a risk of deadly complications if the ProPort housing separates from the reservoir.

What is the ProPort?

The ProPort Plastic Implantable Port is a vein access system. The port is implanted in patients who need repeated venous access for injections, infusions, and/or blood samples. This device may also be used in cancer patients who need chemotherapy.

Implantable Port Lawsuits

Implantable ports are used to reduce the need for multiple needle-sticks in patients who are undergoing certain treatments that require repeated venous access, like blood transfusions or chemotherapy.

These ports are advertised to reduce the risk of complications associated with repeated needle-sticks, such as damaged veins. However, in some cases, the port itself causes severe complications.

Hundreds of Venous Port Lawsuits Have Been Filed

A growing number of lawsuits have been filed by people who were injured by ports, such as the Bard PowerPort. Hundreds of lawsuits have been centralized in a federal Multi-District Litigation (MDL) in federal court in Arizona.
