Purely Soothing Eye Drops Recalled for Infection Risk
In March 2023, the Arizona-based medical company Pharmedica USA issued a voluntary recall for two lots of Purely Soothing 15% MSM Eye Drops that may not be sterile, which poses a risk of infections.
What is the Risk?
No infections or adverse events were reported as of March 3, 2023, but the company warned that “use of contaminated eye drops can result in the risk of eye infections that could result in blindness.”

What Eye Drops Were Recalled?
The recalled eye drops were distributed worldwide by Purely Soothing LLC via online e-commerce websites and trade shows (for example, Amazon Marketplace, etc.).
The eye drops were advertised as anti-inflammatory to assist with inflammation, irritation and/or swelling. They were packaged in a white, cylindrical HDPE bottle with an eye-dropper cap and white lid.

What Should I Do?
Pharmedica LLC is urging consumers to immediately stop using the recalled eye drops and return it to the place of purchase for a refund.

Symptoms of an Eye Infection
Eye infection symptoms may include:
- Yellow, green, or clear discharge from the eye
- Eye pain or discomfort
- Redness of the eye or eyelid
- Feeling of something in your eye (foreign body sensation)
- Increased sensitivity to light
- Blurry vision
Eye Drop Infection Outbreaks
In February 2023, a deadly outbreak of infections was linked to EzriCare Artificial Tears Eye Drops, according to the FDA. At least 64 infections were reported in 13 states, including one person who died when the infection spread to their bloodstream, and other people who lost their vision or went blind. All of the victims were infected with Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a highly antibiotic-resistant bacteria that is commonly found in dirt and water.
