Raw Milk Linked to Salmonella Outbreak in California

In October 2023, health officials in San Diego, California, began investigating an outbreak of Salmonella linked to raw milk. At least 9 people were infected with Salmonella after drinking raw, unpasteurized milk from Raw Farm LLC, a dairy in Fresno, California.

How Many People Got Sick?

Nine illnesses were linked to raw milk from Raw Farm LLC since September 2023. The age of the victims ranged from 1 to 41 years old. Three of the victims were hospitalized, all of whom were children.

What Should I Do?

Health officials urge the public to avoid eating and drinking milk or cheese made from raw, unpasteurized milk due to the health risks.

This is particularly important for people who are most likely to become seriously ill, such as children under 5 years old, elderly adults, and people with vulnerable immune systems.

According to Dr. Seema Shah, medical director of the County’s Epidemiology & Immunization Services Branch:

“The County recommends that people who have products from this company in their homes dispose of them immediately. It’s also important for anyone sick to seek medical care. People who are ill, and those that live with them, should wash their hands frequently to avoid contaminating surfaces and foods that could spread the disease.”

Raw Farm Cheddar Recalled for Salmonella Risk

In August 2023, raw cheddar cheese produced by Raw Farm LLC was recalled and quarantined by health officials in California after a random sample tested positive for Salmonella. The cheese was packaged in 1-pound (16-ounce) blocks which were labeled with BEST BY: 03/16/2024 and BATCH# 20230517-1.
