Robitussin Cough Syrup Recalled for Microbial Contamination

In January 2024, a recall was issued for three varieties of Robitussin Honey CF Max Adult Cough Syrup due to microbial contamination that could lead to severe, life-threatening fungal infections.

What Happened?

No infections were linked to the recalled batches of Robitussin Cough Syrup as of January 2024, but the products may be contaminated with microbes that could cause infections.

High Levels Of Yeast Found in Robitussin

Dangerously high levels of yeast were found in the recalled bottles of Robitussin, according to an emailed message from the manufacturer. Yeast is naturally found in honey, but the levels detected by the company were “beyond allowed measurements.”

How To Identify Recalled Bottles of Robitussin Cough Syrup

The recall involves the following types of Robitussin Cough Syrup:

  • Robitussin Honey Cold & Flu Max Day Adult (4-oz.): Lot Number T10810. Expiration Date 31OCT2025
  • Robitussin Honey Cold & Flu Max Day Adult (8-oz.): Lot Numbers T08730, T08731, T08732, T08733, T10808. Expiration Dates 31MAY2025, 31MAY2025, 31MAY2025, 31MAY2025, 30SEP2025.
  • Robitussin Honey Cold & Flu Max NT Adult (8-oz.): Lot Numbers T08740, T08742. Expiration Dates 30JUN2026, 30JUN2026.

What is the Risk?

In immunocompromised people, using the recalled Robitussin Cough Syrup could result in “severe or life-threatening adverse events such as fungemia or disseminated fungal infection,” according to the recall.

People with weak immune systems may include those who have HIV, diabetes, kidney failure, organ transplants, cancer patients receiving chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, and other medical issues.

The risk of a severe infection is lower for non-immunocompromised individuals, but “an infection that may necessitate medical intervention cannot be completely ruled out,” the recall states.

What is Fungemia?

Fungemia, also known as invasive candidiasis, is a serious fungal infection caused by Candida (yeast). The yeast gets into the bloodstream and spreads to other parts of the body, resulting in life-threatening complications or death.
