What is Roundup?
Roundup is an herbicide made by Monsanto. It contains glyphosate, a chemical that kills weeds and grass by blocking an enzyme they need to survive. Roundup also contains POEA, a chemical known to be toxic to fish and amphibians.
Health Experts Issue Roundup Cancer Warnings
In 2015, Roundup was declared a “probable human carcinogen” by the cancer-research agency of the World Health Organization (WHO). Experts cited three studies linking Roundup with higher rates of non-Hodgkin lymphoma in farm-workers in the U.S., Canada, and Sweden.
Roundup DLBCL Lawusits
In January 2017, a lawsuit (PDF) was filed by a man from Colorado who was diagnosed with diffuse non-Hodgkin lymphoma after years of routinely using the weed-killer Roundup. He started using it in 1979, following all safety precautions. His lawyers accuse Monsanto of failing to warn about the risk of cancer — In RE: John Holm v. Monsanto Co. — Case No. 1:17-cv-0056.
Roundup Lawsuits and Class Actions
In October 2016, federal judges centralized dozens of Roundup lawsuits against Monsanto into one federal court in California. All of the lawsuits involve people with non-Hodgkin lymphoma who say Monsanto failed to warn them about the risk of cancer from Roundup. Monsanto is also facing class actions from angry consumers who are seeking refunds.
What is Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma?
Lymphoma is the most common type of blood cancer. The two main types of lymphoma are Hodgkin’s Disease and Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma (NHL). Both types occur when white blood cells in the immune system called lymphocytes grow uncontrollably.
What is DLBCL?
Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma (DLBCL) starts in B-lymphocytes (B-cells). It is the most common subtype of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, accounting for 30-40% of all cases. The cancer cells look abnormally large under a microscope.
Early Warning Signs of Lymphoma
Lymph nodes all over the body contain lymphocytes. The most common sign of DLBCL is a painless lump in the neck, armpit, or groin that grows quickly over a few weeks. About 40% of DLBCL cases develop in other parts of the body like the stomach, intestines, nasal sinuses, liver, lungs, testicles, skin, brain, or eyes.
Symptoms of DLBCL
The symptoms of DLBCL depend on where it grows. Patients may experience:
- Painless lump
- Enlarged lymph nodes
- Feeling sick
- Night sweats
- Unexplained fevers
- Unintentional weight-loss
- Fatigue
- Stomach or chest pain or pressure
- Loss of appetite
- Itching
- Shortness of breath or cough
Risk Factors for Lymphoma
DLBCL can occur at any age, but the average age of diagnosis is 60-65 years old. In some cases, people with low-grade lymphoma develop aggressive DLBCL. It is also more common in people with autoimmune diseases or a vulnerable immune system.
Tests & Diagnosis
The best way to diagnose DLBCL is with a biopsy (tissue sample) from an enlarged lymph node. The biopsy is examined under a microscope by a pathologist who looks for cancer cells. Blood tests and CT scans help diagnose the “stage” of DLBCL and find out where it is growing.
Treatments for DLBCL
DLBCL is an aggressive cancer that grows and spreads quickly. It requires immediate treatment with chemotherapy and sometimes radiation therapy. Fortunately, 75% of patients are disease-free after treatment and about 50% of patients are cured.
