Roundup is a weed-killer that has been linked to higher rates of non-Hodgkin lymphoma in studies of farm-workers. One subtype is a fast-growing brain cancer called Primary Central Nervous System (CNS) Lymphoma.

Does Roundup Cause Brain Damage?
Researchers who injected rats with Roundup during pregnancy and lactation produced offspring with brain damage, according to a study published by the journal Toxicology in June 2014.
Does Roundup Cause Cancer?
In 2015, cancer-research experts at the World Health Organization (WHO) classified glyphosate as a “probable human carcinogen” based on studies linking exposure to non-Hodgkin lymphoma in farm-workers in the United States, Canada, and Sweden. However, the link is controversial and no one knows for sure.
Does Roundup Contain Toxic Chemicals?
Roundup contains glyphosate, a chemical that kills plants by blocking an enzyme they need to survive. It also contains POEA, a soap-like chemical that dissolves the waxy coating on leafy plants to help glyphosate get into the plant.
Monsanto insists that glyphosate is safe, but POEA is known to be toxic to fish and amphibians. POEA also helps glyphosate get into the body of humans and animals. Even if glyphosate is safe on its own, it could be far more toxic in combination with POEA.
What is Primary CNS Lymphoma?
Primary Central Nervous System (CNS) Lymphoma is a cancer of the immune system in the brain. In some cases, it also occurs in the spinal cord, eyes, or meninges (outer covering of the brain).
Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma of the Brain
Primary CNS lymphoma is a type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma that is limited to the nervous system, and almost always starts in the brain. It occurs when white blood cells (B-cell lymphocytes) grow out of control. Over 90% of patients have aggressive, fast-growing type of cancer known as Diffuse Large B-cell Lymphoma (DLBCL).
Primary Brain Tumors
About 3% patients who get brain tumors have primary CNS lymphoma. These tumors create a lump in the brain made of lymphocytes. Half of patients have multiple brain tumors when they are diagnosed.
Symptoms of CNS Lymphoma
- Muscle weakness or numbness
- Seizures
- Headache
- Increased pressure in the brain
- Nausea and/or vomiting
- Falling or having trouble balancing
- Pain (neck or back)
- Paralysis
- Problems speaking
- Cognitive problems
- Eye problems
Ocular Lymphoma in the Eyes
Primary CNS lymphoma spreads to the eyes in 10-15% of patients, but only about half of patients notice changes to their vision. The symptoms may include blurry vision, “floaters” or spot, light sensitivity, vision loss, or blindness.
Diagnosis & Tests for Primary Brain Lymphoma
Primary brain lymphoma is diagnosed with a combination of imaging scans (MRI or CT scan) of the head, biopsies (tissue samples) from the brain that are examined under a microscope, and a spinal tap (lumbar puncture) to look for cancerous cells in the cerebrospinal fluid.
Treatment for Cerebral Lymphoma
The first step in treatment for cerebral lymphoma is usually an injection of anti-inflammatory corticosteroids to reduce swelling in the brain. Other treatments typically include chemotherapy and radiation. When primary CNS lymphoma is diagnosed before it spreads outside the brain, 70% of patients survive for at least 10 years with radiation. Later stages of the disease are hard to treat and relapse is common, although survival-rates have improved dramatically since the 1990s.
