Roundup was declared a “probable human carcinogen” based on studies linking it to non-Hodgkin lymphoma. About 20% of victims develop a slow-growing subtype known as follicular lymphoma.

Evidence Linking Roundup and Lymphoma
In 2015, the cancer-research agency of the World Health Organization (WHO) warned that Roundup could probably cause cancer in humans. Their concern was based on studies showing it caused cancer in rats. In humans, evidence is more limited — but three studies in the U.S. Canada, and Sweden found higher rates of non-Hodgkin lymphoma among farm-workers who were exposed to high levels of Roundup.
Does Roundup Cause Cancer?
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) classified Roundup as a “possible” carcinogen in the 1990s based on those rat studies. But today, the EPA says evidence is inconclusive. No one knows if Roundup causes cancer, but many people say Monsanto should warn people about the potential risk. Dozens of lawsuits have been centralized in California. A number of class actions have also been filed by consumers seeking refunds.
What is Follicular Lymphoma?
Follicular lymphoma is a blood cancer in the immune system. It occurs when white blood cells, B-lymphocytes (B-cells), grow uncontrollably. Follicular lymphoma is a slow-growing subtype of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, making up around 25% of all cases. About 18,000 new cases of follicular lymphoma will be diagnosed in the United States in 2016.
Warning Signs & Symptoms
Many people with follicular lymphoma do not develop symptoms for years. A common early symptom is a painless lump on the neck, armpit, or groin. Other symptoms may include:
- Enlarged lymph nodes
- Fever
- Fatigue
- Loss of appetite
- Weight-loss
- Night sweats
- Shortness of breath
- Anemia
- Itching
Risk-Factors
No one knows what causes follicular lymphoma, but it is more common in people who have been exposed to carcinogenic chemicals. The average age of diagnosis is 60 years old and it is slightly more common in women.
Complications
Follicular lymphoma is a low-grade cancer, but it can transform into an aggressive type of lymphoma that grows and spreads quickly. Cancerous cells spread (metastasize) to bone marrow, organs, or other areas of the body and grow into tumors.
Diagnosis & Tests
The best way to diagnose follicular lymphoma is with a biopsy (tissue sample) from an enlarged lymph node that a doctor examines under a microscope. The cancer is “staged” with blood tests, CT scans, and other tests.
Treatment
The good news is that many people with follicular lymphoma do not need treatment for years. It grows so slowly that chemotherapy and radiation therapy may not be very effective in its early stages. Unfortunately, this also means follicular lymphoma is hard to cure.
