What is the Problem?

Novo Nordisk is facing lawsuits from people who were diagnosed with stomach paralysis after taking diabetes medications. These lawsuits claim that patients were not adequately warned about the severe risk.

In some cases, patients had to be hospitalized due to extreme vomiting, nausea, bloating, pain, acid reflux, and other symptoms.

What is Rybelsus?

Rybelsus® (semaglutide) is a prescription medication for type-2 diabetes. It was developed by Novo Nordisk and approved in the U.S. in September 2019. Rybelsus is usually taken as a once-daily pill in 7-mg or 14-mg doses on an empty stomach.

The active ingredient in Rybelsus is semaglutide. This is the same active ingredient in other diabetes medications, such as Ozempic® and Wegovy®, but these other medications must be taken as a once-weekly injection.

How Does Rybelsus Work?

Rybelsus belongs to a group of diabetes drugs that mimic GLP-1, which is a natural human hormone that is released after a meal. People who take Rybelsus (or similar GLP-1 medications) can expect several effects in the brain and digestive system.

Rybelsus tells the body to secrete more insulin in response to food, which helps control blood-sugar levels. It also reduces the amount of glucose produced by the liver, and slows down the movement of food from the stomach to the intestines, which helps people feel full longer.

Rybelsus Delays Gastric Emptying

The Rybelsus Prescribing Information warns: “RYBELSUS® causes a delay of gastric emptying, and thereby has the potential to impact the absorption of other oral medications.” However, there is no specific warning for stomach paralysis or gastroparesis on the label.

What is Stomach Paralysis?

Stomach paralysis is a digestive problem that occurs when the movement of food from the stomach into the intestines is abnormally slow. In very severe cases, food does not move out of the stomach, and instead forms a hard mass called a “bezoar,” which can block digestion and cause an intestinal obstruction or other complications.

What is Diabetic Gastroparesis?

Type-2 diabetes is a risk-factor for stomach paralysis (also called gastroparesis or “delayed gastric emptying”).

Diabetics who suffer from long-term problems controlling high blood-sugar levels can develop permanent nerve damage in the stomach muscles and digestive system. The stomach becomes too weak to effectively move food into the intestines, which slows down digestion.

Diabetics May Not Realize They Have Stomach Paralysis

Stomach paralysis does not always cause symptoms, especially in the early stages. People with diabetes who start taking Rybelsus or similar GLP-1 medications may not realize that they have stomach paralysis until the medication causes their symptoms to worsen dramatically.

Symptoms of Stomach Paralysis (Gastroparesis)

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Vomiting undigested food that was eaten hours ago
  • Feeling full very quickly after eating
  • Feeling full for hours after eating a meal
  • Bloating
  • Belching
  • Stomach pain
  • Abdominal swelling
  • Poor appetite
  • Weight-loss
  • Malnutrition

Are Lawsuits Being Filed?

Yes. A growing number of lawsuits have been filed by people who developed stomach paralysis after taking diabetes drugs like Rybelsus, Ozempic, Mounjaro, and others. These lawsuits claim that pharmaceutical companies did not adequately study the risk of stomach paralysis, delayed gastric emptying, or other side effects.
