VIDEO: Ozempic and Wegovy May Paralyze Stomach, Doctors Warn

What is Wegovy?

Wegovy® (generic: semaglutide) is a once-weekly injection medication that can be used to treat type-2 diabetes and help people lose weight. It is manufactured by the pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk and it was approved by the FDA in 2021.

Wegovy vs. Ozempic

Wegovy contains semaglutide, which is the same active ingredient in Ozempic®. The difference is that Wegovy is available in higher dosages than Ozempic (up to 2.4-mg/week). Wegovy is also specifically approved for the treatment of obesity, while Ozempic is primarily used for managing type-2 diabetes.

How Does Wegovy Work?

Wegovy mimics the action of a hormone called GLP-1, which the body normally releases after eating. This helps prevent blood-sugar spikes and crashes. It also slows down the movement of food through the digestive system. Both of these effects make patients feel less hungry and full longer after eating, so they eat less and lose weight.

Wegovy Lawsuits

Lawsuits against the makers of Wegovy, Ozempic, Mounjaro and other diabetes drugs allege that patients were not warned about the risk of stomach paralysis (gastroparesis), Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome (CVS), gallbladder problems, and other severe digestive side effects.

What is Stomach Paralysis?

Stomach paralysis, also known as gastroparesis, is when the movement of food from the stomach into the intestines is abnormally slow or stops altogether.

Symptoms of Stomach Paralysis

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Stomach pain
  • Abdominal discomfort
  • Feeling full after eating only a few bites of food
  • Feeling full long after a meal is finished
  • No appetite
  • Vomiting undigested food
  • Bloating
  • Belching
  • Heartburn (acid reflux)
  • Weight-loss
  • Malnutrition
  • Bezoars
  • Stomach obstruction or intestinal blockage
  • And more

Studies Linking Wegovy and Stomach Paralysis

Lawsuits allege that Novo Nordisk and other drug-makers should have known about the risk of stomach paralysis from semaglutide based on recent studies.

For example, a study from August 2020 titled “Diabetic Gastroparesis: A Review” warned that Wegovy, Ozempic, and other GLP-1 diabetes drugs may worsen stomach paralysis:

“Patients do not know they have diabetic gastroparesis until they are put on a glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist such as … semaglutide … to manage their blood glucose. … This class of drugs can exacerbate the symptoms of diabetic gastroparesis.”

What Can I Do?

There is no excuse for pharmaceutical companies who fail to warn about severe side effects. The Prescribing Information warns that “Wegovy delays gastric emptying,” but does not include stomach paralysis, gastroparesis, or many other severe digestive issues that were reported by patients who have taken Wegovy.

Our lawyers are evaluating cases involving people who took Wegovy and developed stomach paralysis, gastroparesis, and other severe side effects. If you qualify to file a lawsuit, we may be able to help you seek justice and compensation for your pain and suffering, medical bills, long-term health problems, lost income, and more.
