Savage Cat Food Recalled for Bird Flu (H5N1)
In March 2025, a recall was issued for Savage Cat Food, a raw chicken pet food, after reports of cats and kittens who died of Bird Flu (H5N1).
Savage Cat Food Recall
The recall was announced by Savage Pet, a raw pet food company that is based in El Cajon, California.
The recall involves 66 Large Chicken Boxes (84 oz.), and 74 Small Chicken Boxes (21 oz.) with the lot code/best by date of 1115202.
Savage Cat Food Linked to 1st Bird Flu Illness in Colorado
In February 2025, Savage Pet was notified of a cat in Colorado who contracted H5N1 and got sick and recovered. Laboratory tests on a sealed package of Savage Cat Food were “non-negative” for H5N1. Further testing on March 6, 2025 “confirmed the virus to be negative.”
Two Cats Die of Bird Flu in New York
On March 13, 2025, Savage Pet was notified of another case in New York of a kitten that was feeding on lot 11152026 who contracted avian flu and died. Further testing is ongoing.
The kitten who died also exposed another cat in New York who also died. This other cat did not eat Savage Cat Food, but was exposed to the kitten who ate raw Savage Cat Food.
NY Health Officials Warn Not To Feed Pets Savage Cat Food
On March 15, the New York City Health Department warned “New Yorkers to not feed their pets food from the raw pet food company Savage Cat Food. Avian influenza (bird flu) virus was detected in two cats and a suspected third cat over the past two months, all connected to Savage Cat Food, poultry packets lot number 11152026.”
In response, Savage Pet recalled the food: “To ensure maximum safety we are modifying our market withdrawal to a recall. The product with lot code/best by date of 11152026 was distributed in November 2024. Do not feed the recalled product to pets or animals.”
What Should I Do?
Cats who ate the recalled raw food could get sick if they were exposed to the Bird Flu virus (H5N1). Pet owners should be vigilant for bird flu symptoms in cats, which may include:
“People who fed cats the recalled products should watch for symptoms of bird flu, including fever, lethargy, low appetite, reddened or inflamed eyes, discharge from the eyes and nose, difficulty breathing, and neurological signs like tremors, stiff body movements, seizure, lack of coordination, or blindness.”
People who handled the raw food could also get sick. “Humans can become infected if live virus gets into a person’s eyes, nose, or mouth,” the recall warns.

People who handled the recalled Savage Cat Food products should sanitize surfaces, and watch for symptoms of bird flu, such as:
- Eye redness or irritation (conjunctivitis)
- Cough
- Sore throat
- Sneezing
- Runny or stuffy nose
- Muscle / body aches
- Headaches
- Fatigue
- Fever
- Trouble breathing
- Seizures
- Rash
- Diarrhea
- Nausea
- Vomiting
