Segway Recalls 220,000 Electric Scooters After 20 Injuries
In March 2025, Segway announced a recall for about 220,000 electric scooters (“e-scooters”) after 20 people fell and were injured when the handlebars or stem unexpectedly folded up while the scooter was being used.
According to the recall warning:
“The folding mechanism can fail and cause the handlebars or stem to fold while the scooter is in use, posing a fall hazard to consumers.”
What is the Risk?
Accidents and falls on e-scooters can be very serious or even deadly, especially if the scooter folds up when it is going at top speed (20mph+), or the accident occurs when the rider is on a roadway.
What Types of Injuries Were Reported?
Segway said there were 68 reports of folding mechanism failures, including 20 people who fell and suffered injuries, including:
- Abrasions (scrapes)
- Bruises
- Lacerations (cuts)
- Broken bones)
Was My Segway Scooter Recalled?
The recall involves Segway Ninebot Max G30P and Max G30LP KickScooters, which are foldable e-scooters that can reach speeds of nearly 20 mph and go about 25 miles on a full charge.
The scooters were sold nationwide from January 2020 through February 2025.
They were sold at Best Buy, Costco, Walmart, Target and Sam’s Club and online at Segway.com and Amazon.com for $600 to $1,000.
Can I Get a Refund?
No. Segway is not offering a refund for the recalled Segway Ninebot Max G30P and Max G30LP KickScooters.
Instead of a refund, Segway is urging customers to immediately stop using the recalled e-scooters and register for a free maintenance kit.
The maintenance kit will include tools and instructions for checking and tightening the folding mechanism and keeping it properly maintained.
What Should I Do?
Customers can register for a maintenance kit or get more information by contacting Segway, or visiting the recall website at https://service.segway.com/us-en/recall, and enter your product name: Segway Ninebot Max G30P and Ninebot Max G30LP KickScooters.
