Did Any Kids Get Sick?
No illnesses or reports of illness or lead poisoning were confirmed by Sprout Organics when the recall was announced in September 2025.
However, the recall warns about the long-term health risks for children who are exposed to toxic lead poisoning by eating contaminated food:
“If a child is exposed to enough lead for a protracted period of time, this can affect learning and development or cause other long-term health problems.”
What is the Risk?
Lead is a toxic heavy metal that is not safe at any level. Even low-level exposure can increase blood-levels of lead, but symptoms depend on the amount and duration of lead exposure. Side effects are most likely after exposure to high levels of lead, or chronic long-term exposure.
Toxic Baby Food Lawsuits
Hundreds of lawsuits have been filed for children who were harmed by lead and other heavy metals in toxic baby food. Children are most vulnerable to the harmful effects of lead poisoning and other toxic metals in baby food, due to their smaller size and fast-growing bodies.
What is the Risk?
Lead poisoning can cause lifelong health problems in nearly every part of the body. Children are most vulnerable to lead poisoning, who may show symptoms like:
- Brain damage
- Decreased intelligence
- Behavior difficulties
- Lower IQ
- Learning problems
- Decreased ability to pay attention
- Under-performance in school
- Slowed growth and development
- Hearing and speech problems
- Serious illness and death
- And more
