Stanley Recalls 2.6 Million Travel Mugs for Burn Risk

In December 2024, Stanley recalled about 2.6 million Stanley Switchback and Trigger Action Travel Mugs after dozens of people were burned when the lid detached during use, spilling extremely hot liquid onto their face and body.

What is the Problem?

Stanley recalled over 2 million travel mugs worldwide because the lid threads can shrink when exposed to heat and torque, which can cause the lid to detach during use. This problem poses burn hazards from hot liquids (such as coffee or tea).

How Many People Were Burned?

Stanley received 38 reports of people who were burned due to the lid detaching on a Stanley Switchback or Trigger Action Travel Mug, including 2 people in the U.S.

Overall, Stanley received 91 reports worldwide of the recalled travel mugs’ lids detaching during use, including 16 reports from people in the U.S.

Some of these burn injuries were quite serious. There were 11 people who needed medical attention when the lid detached and hot liquid spilled out, according to Stanley.

How To Identify Recalled Stanley Travel Mugs

The recall includes all stainless-steel Stanley Switchback and Trigger Action Travel Mugs that were sold in the United States. Look on the bottom of the mug for the following product identification numbers:

  • Switchback: 12 ounces (20-01437), 16 ounces (20-01436, 20-02211)
  • Trigger Action: 12 ounces (20-02033, 20-02779, 20-02825), 16 ounces (20-02030, 20-02745, 20-02957), 20 ounces (20-02034, 20-02746)

Where Were They Sold?

The recalled Stanley travel mugs were sold from June 2016 through December 2024 on Amazon.com, Walmart, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Target and other stores nationwide and online for between $20-$50.

What Should I Do?

Stanley is urging customers to immediately stop using Stanley Switchback and Trigger Action Travel Mugs and contact the company for a free replacement lid, including shipping.
