UPDATE: E. coli Strain Linked to Outbreak With 12 Illnesses

November 10, 2020 — Tanimura & Antle Romaine Lettuce tested positive for the same strain of E. coli that infected at least 12 people in 6 states between September 7 and October 14, including 5 people who were hospitalized, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The states include California (2), Illinois (4), Michigan (2), Ohio (1), Pennsylvania (2), and Virginia (1). Health officials are still investigating whether all of the sick people ate Tanimura & Antle Romaine Lettuce, or additional products.

Tanimura & Antle Romaine Lettuce Recall

In November 2020, Tanimura & Antle® Romaine Lettuce was recalled in 19 states after a bag from Walmart tested positive for E. coli 0157:H7. The recall includes single heads of romaine lettuce that were sold in a clear plastic zip-top bag. The bag is marked with a blue label and white letters, UPC 0-27918-20314-9, and a white sticker indicating it was packed in Salinas, California on 10/15/2020 or 10/16/2020.

Walmart Recalls Lettuce After E. Coli Outbreak in Michigan

On November 6, 2020, the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development said a bag of Tanimura & Antle Romaine Lettuce from a Walmart in Comstock Park, MI was positive for E. coli.

Two people in Michigan tested positive for E. coli 0157:H7, a dangerous strain that was closely-matched to the strain of E. coli in the bag of lettuce from Walmart, according to health officials.

Walmart Recalls Tanimura & Antle Romaine Lettuce at Stores in 19 States

The recalled lettuce was distributed in Arkansas, Oregon, California, Texas, Arizona, Oklahoma, Indiana, Nebraska, Missouri, Tennessee, Wisconsin, New Mexico, South Carolina, Washington, North Carolina, Ohio, Virginia, Massachusetts, Puerto Rico, and Illinois.

Anyone who bough this recalled lettuce is urged to throw it away or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Health Risks of E. coli 0157:H7

Shiga-toxin producing E. coli 0157:H7 is a dangerous strain that commonly causes bloody diarrhea. About 5-10% of people develop a life-threatening type of kidney failure called Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS). In about 3-5% of cases, HUS causes permanent kidney damage, neurological complications, and death.
