TDF Lawsuit

TDF Lawsuit

Gilead Sciences is facing lawsuits from people who took TDF medications for HIV/AIDS and developed severe bone loss, tooth decay, and kidney side effects. They accuse Gilead of intentionally delaying development of a safer version of TDF called TAF (Tenofovir Alafenamide) to maximize profits.

What is the Problem?

The original TDF formula was developed as a daily 300-mg dose. This older tenofovir formula accumulates in the bones and kidneys, and it is associated with bone thinning, tooth decay, and kidney damage.

TDF vs. TAF — Risk of Bone & Kidney Side Effects

Gilead developed a new tenofovir formulation, TAF, that works just as well as the older TDF formula. However, blood concentrations of TAF are typically 90% lower than TDF, which dramatically reduces the risk of bone and kidney damage.

What is TDF?

Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate (TDF) is a prescription medicine that is approved by the FDA for the treatment of HIV infection in adults and children over 2 years old. It is always used in combination with other HIV drugs.

How Does TDF Work?

TDF belongs to a group of anti-HIV drugs called Nucleoside Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitors (NRTIs), which work by blocking an HIV enzyme that prevents the virus from multiplying. This can reduce the amount of HIV in the body.

What is TDF Used For?

TDF does not cure HIV or AIDS, but taking it every day helps people with HIV live longer and healthier lives. Some types of TDF medications are also used for PReP, which reduce the risk of HIV infection or transmission in people who are at high risk of infection.

TDF and Hepatitis B

TDF is also approved by the FDA for the treatment of chronic Hepatitis B infection in adults and children over 12 years old. Approximately 10% of HIV-infected people are also infected with chronic Hepatitis B. It is the leading caused of chronic liver disease worldwide. Gilead Sciences specifically markets Viread® for the treatment of Hepatitis B infection.
