August 21, 2019 — Tip Top Poultry Inc. has recalled 135,000 pounds of fully-cooked, frozen, diced chicken products for institutional use because a sample tested positive for Listeria.
The recalled chicken was sold under brand-names such as Tip Top®, Perdue Farms®, Gordon®, Sysco®, and West Creek®.
The products were shipped to hotels, restaurants, nursing homes, and other institutions nationwide in the U.S.
Consumers can identify the recalled chicken products with establishment number “P-17453” inside the USDA mark of inspection on the case, and a production date of January 21, 2019.
The recall was issued after Canadian food inspectors reported the a sample of chicken tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes during an investigation into an outbreak of food poisoning.
The outbreak in Canada was linked to Rosemount® cooked diced chicken products. Seven illnesses were confirmed in British Columbia (1), Manitoba (1) and Ontario (5) since November 2017, with 6 of the victims hospitalized due to severe Listeria infections.
The USDA Food Safety Inspection Service is concerned that institutions may still have the recalled products in their freezers.
Infections with Listeria can cause severe complications, especially in people with vulnerable immune systems. Pregnant women who are infected may have few symptoms, but suffer a miscarriage, stillbirth, or infection of the newborn baby.
