UPDATE: Tyson Expands Chicken Recall After Deadly Listeria Outbreak
On July 8, 2021, Tyson Foods expanded a chicken recall to include another 462,000 pounds of chicken that may be contaminated with Listeria bacteria. In total, Tyson has now recalled of 8,955,296 pounds of chicken.
The recall involves 30 types of frozen, fully-cooked chicken products that were manufactured between December 26, 2020, and April 13, 2021, including chicken sold under the Tyson brand and other brands.
The chicken was sold in grocery stores, deli counters, and distributed to schools, hospitals, grocery stores, restaurants, nursing homes and long-term care facilities, and U.S. Department of Defense locations.
According to federal officials, “Some products bear a different establishment number on the label due to further processing and some products may have been served from the deli counter in retail stores.”
Tyson Recalls 8.5 Million Pounds of Frozen Chicken
In July 2021, Tyson Foods recalled nearly 8.5 million pounds of frozen, pre-cooked chicken after a deadly outbreak of Listeria food poisoning illnesses.
What Chicken Products Were Recalled?
Tyson recalled 30 different frozen, fully-cooked, chicken products under 5 brand-names. The products include chicken, wings, strips, pulled chicken, and pizzas with chicken toppings.
The recalled chicken is mostly Tyson® brand-name products, but some of the recalled items were sold under other brands, such as Casey’s General Store, Jet’s Pizza, Little Caesars, and Marco’s Pizza.
Where Was The Chicken Sold?
The recalled chicken was sold nationwide at major stores like Walmart, Target, Kroger, Publix, H-E-B, Wegmans, Stewart’s Shops, and others. It was also shipped to hospitals, nursing facilities, schools, restaurants, Department of Defense locations, and other institutions. For a full list of recalled products, click here.
CDC Outbreak Investigation of Listeria Outbreak
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a food safety alert after investigators linked the recalled Tyson chicken to at least 3 Listeria illnesses in Texas (2) and Delaware (1) from April 6, 2021 to June 5, 2021.
All of the sick people were served chicken while they were in hospitals or long-term care facilities, according to the CDC.
The recall was issued after CDC investigators found a strain of Listeria that closely matched the outbreak strain in 2 samples of Tyson frozen chicken, including 1 sample from a Tyson facility in Missouri, and another sample from an unidentified establishment.
