NHTSA Investigates 1.9 Million Toyota RAV4 for Battery Fire Hazard

On February 25, 2021, federal officials opened a Toyota RAV4 investigation after reports of battery fires in nearly 1.9 million Toyota RAV4 vehicles from model-years 2013 through 2018. The fires have been reported while driving, and also when RAV4s were parked and the ignition was off.

What is the Problem?

There have been multiple complaints that the 12-volt battery in certain RAV4 vehicles can short out, which can cause the vehicle to suddenly stall and lose power before a fire starts inside the engine compartment.

How Many Fires Were Reported?

The 12-volt battery on the left side of the engine compartment has been linked to 11 reports of non-crash fires.

Seven of these RAV4 fires occurred while driving, but 4 fires occurred when the vehicle was parked and the ignition was turned off, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Other Factors Linked to RAV4 Fires

The NHTSA said it has received more than 11 reports of non-crash fires in RAV4 vehicles, but the agency blamed those fires on “improper battery installation or prior front end collision repair was a factor.”

Toyota Investigation Finds Problems With 12-Volt Battery Fires

A preliminary investigation by Toyota concluded that the 12-volt battery B+ terminal may cause an electrical short on the battery hold-down frame, which may result in the sudden loss of electrical power, vehicle stalling, and/or a fire originating in the engine compartment.
