Trader Joe’s Hummus Recalled for Listeria Risk

December 2, 2016 — Trader Joe’s has recalled two flavors of hummus due to possible contamination with Listeria, a bacteria that can cause food poisoning.

The two flavor being recalled are Mediterranean Hummus and White Bean & Basil Hummus, sold in 16-oz plastic tubs with “Best By” dates up through and including December 15, 2016, according to the FDA.
Listeria Hummus Recall
No illnesses have been reported. The products were supplied to Trader Joe’s by Bakkavor Foods USA, Inc. The recall was issued after testing by the company revealed Listeria in products made on the same equipment.

All of the remaining products have been removed from Trader Joe’s stores and destroyed. Consumers who purchased the recalled hummus should return it to the store for a full refund.

The recall comes just days after a Sabra Dipping Co. recalled most of their hummus due to Listeria. Sabra hummus is a popular brand that is sold at Costco grocery stores.

Listeria monocytogenes is a bacteria that can cause severe and sometimes deadly food poisoning. The symptoms include high fever, severe headache, muscle aches, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Pregnant women can have a miscarriage or stillbirth.
