Vecaro LifeStyle Recalls Hoverboards for Fire Risk

Vecaro LifeStyle Recalls Hoverboards for Fire Risk

March 24, 2017 — A recall has been issued for about 600 Vecaro LifeStyle hoverboards after three reports of the lithium-ion batteries overheating and smoking.

The following Vecaro hoverboards (or self-balancing scooters) are included in the recall:

  • Verona Glide65
  • Drift8
  • Trek10

“Vecaro” is printed on the front of the outer case. They came in a variety of colors: black, white, red, blue, metallic gold, metallic silver, graffiti white print, and red flame print.

Vecaro LifeStyle hoverboards were sold for about $400 at The Audio Shop, Stereo Xone in California, and online at VecaroLifestyle.com from November 2015 through November 2016.

The manufacturer is offering a free repair or credit toward the purchase of a UL 2272 Glide or Glide-X hoverboard.

The recall was announced just days after U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) opened a priority investigation into a deadly fire in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania that was sparked by an unnamed brand of hoverboard.

The fire caused the deaths of Ashanti Hughes, 3, and Savannah Dominick, 10. There is a 3rd girl who is recovering from burn injuries.

Investigators say the hoverboard was charging by the front door on the first floor when it sparked and caught on fire. A firefighter also died of injuries he suffered in a car accident while responding to the fire.

The CPSC recalled over 500,000 hoverboards last year. The agency is urging consumers to check if it is on the list of recalls before it is too late. Over 60 fires have been reported, as well as nearly 100 reports of the lithium-ion batteries overheating, smoking, catching on fire, or exploding.
