Whole Foods Ricotta Recalled After Deadly Listeria Outbreak
In February 2024, Whole Foods Ricotta and dozens of other dairy products were recalled by Rizo-López Foods after a deadly outbreak of Listeria.
How Many People Got Sick?
Cheese and dairy products from Rizo-López Foods were linked to 2 deaths in California and Texas. At least 23 people in 11 states were hospitalized due to a severe illness. It is likely that many more illnesses were never reported, according to the CDC Outbreak Investigation.
What Happened?
The long-running outbreak began in 2014 and continued for nearly a decade before health officials found the outbreak strain of Listeria in a facility where Rizo-López Foods made and packaged cheese.
The recalls involve dozens of types of dairy products sold under 13 brand-names, including 365 Whole Foods Market and many others.

- 365 Whole Foods Market Ricotta (Whole Milk) — 15-oz., UPC 9-94824-96245, All dates through 04/02/2024
- 365 Whole Foods Market Ricotta (Part Skim) — 15-oz., UPC 9-94824-63052, All dates through 04/02/2024
What is the Risk?
Listeria monocytogenes is especially dangerous for people who are pregnant, over 65 years old, or have a weakened immune system. These people have a higher risk of suffering life-threatening complications if the Listeria infection spreads in their body.
Signs & Symptoms of Listeria Infections
The symptoms usually start within 2 weeks of eating contaminated food, but it can take up to 70 days. Pregnant women usually have a fever, muscle aches, or tiredness. Healthy people who are not pregnant may have the following symptoms:
- Fever
- Muscle aches
- Tiredness
- Headache
- Stiff neck
- Confusion
- Loss of balance
- Seizures
