Wegmans Recalls Organic Walnuts for Salmonella Risk

Wegmans Recalls Organic Walnuts for Salmonella Risk

March 20, 2015 — Wegmans grocery stores have issued a recall for Organic Walnut Halves & Pieces that may pose a risk of food poisoning due to Salmonella contamination.

The walnuts were sold from January 27, 2015 through March 17, 2015, packaged in 6oz clear plastic tubs, and marked with UPC 077890358009. They were distributed to 85 stores in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland, and Massachusetts.

The products have not been linked to any reports of food poisoning.

The recall was issued after specific grower lots of organic walnuts tested positive for Salmonella, according to the FDA.

This is the second major walnut recall this week. Trader Joe’s also recalled raw California walnut pieces and halves due to possible contamination with Salmonella. No cases of food poisoning have been reported. Walnuts have been pulled off store shelves during an investigation into the source of the problems.

Salmonella is a bacteria that can cause illness within 72 hours of consumption. Symptoms typically include fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain for up to one week.

While most healthy adults recover from Salmonella without needing treatment, infections can be deadly. The risk is especially serious for young children, older adults, and people with weak immune systems.

According to the FDA, Salmonella infection can also cause a variety of life-threatening complications:

“In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.”
